Ivey and I have decided to do a project helping the less fortunate. We are currently in the process of trying to get into contact with a homeless shelter in downtown Indianapolis. We are struggling with having someone get back with us currently. Our plan is to get a small group of girls together with a group of girls from New Palestine and hopefully form friendships between the two vastly different backgrounds. We are going to create the whole prom experience for them. We will take them to get their nails and hair done and also get them dresses. To get the dresses we are planning on partnering with a program already at our school that sells prom dresses for cheap. To raise the money for these ideas we are planning on either getting donations from companies or applying for a grant to get the money.

Ivey, Maya, and I decided we wanted to do a project that involved sports. After some thought and talking to our athletic director, Mr. Copper, we decided to create a “Future Dragons Fair.” We think this is important because it is important to connect families with younger children to high school students and coaches. We also think it is important for middle/elementary aged students to get insight into what high school sports look like. We hope to connect high school students and coaches to younger students who have similar interests.
We decided to start by emailing the high school coaches and seeing if they would be willing to participate. While we were doing that we were also had to look through schedules and see if there was a possible date that every team could be there. We figured out with all the crazy schedules the only day that could possibly work was a Friday, which meant that the football team wouldn't be able to participate, but it was going to have to do. After we had a date and all the responses we started making fliers and advertising at the elementary and middle schools. When we were done with that all we had left was to plan the event. Ivey, Maya, and I proposed the Future Dragons Fair project. We made a PowerPoint to present to administrators. The PowerPoint included our driving problem, which is there needs to be a stronger connection between elementary/middle school students and high school students. Our goals were to connect families with younger children to high school students and coaches and also giving insight of what high school sports look like so the kids know what to look forward to. To get the proposal ready we had to make sure we thought through everything and talked to our mentor, Mr. Copper. We had to think of where the fair would occur, make sure coaches and students would attend, and what would happen at the fair. To present to the administrators was a little nerve racking but they were completely helpful. I also thought it was very interesting to hear other students projects so that you could get more ideas or give them ideas.
For the Future Dragons Fair our goal was to provide information to elementary and middle school kids about how to get involved and prepared for high school sports. To start we had to contact high school coaches and make sure they were willing to participate. After we got willing responses we had to advertise in the middle school and elementary schools. We chose this project because we want kids to get involved with sports at an early age and be successful when they get into high school. We hope to inform kids about the possibilities of sports in high school. We were a little worried that we wouldn't have the participation from coaches that we needed. After Maya, Ivey, and I arrived at the school and set everything up the coaches started to arrive with their props. Coach Fannin (the soccer coach) took this very seriously and brought film, candy, and even jerseys. We had an unexpected team (wrestling) show up with props so we gave them a table and it worked out great. They probably got the most interest out of any team. At the conclusion of the event we were overall very happy with how it went. The only thing I wish that would have been better is that more younger kids could have shown up. We know now know what we will have to fix to make the winter fair even better than this one! |
